Hello! I am Juan Martinez and I am excited to be running in the 2018 Chicago Marathon. My interest in running really began at home. My mom has been a runner since she was in middle school and to this day, running is a part of her everyday schedule. Needless to say, she’s been the inspiration behind this feat. Therefore, it’s only fitting that I run with a group named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Angels, a Catholic Mission serving the poor on Chicago’s West side.
The Mission serves 700+ families a month with food and other basic material needs, assists at risk kids in after-school programs, serves bi-weekly community meals and, most importantly, brings the hope of Christ to a neighborhood plagued by gangs, violence and poverty.
I am committed to train and race for the Mission and I am counting on your support! First and foremost, I need your prayers to persevere through training and to finish the race. Your prayers are needed so I can successfully spread the good news about the Mission through my running.
Finally, I need your financial support. The Mission is able to provide all of its services to its neighbors for free because of many generous donations from people like yourself. The Mission is working on better establishing its program in the neighborhood, and needs your help to do that. If you are able, please consider donating.
The financial need is particularly great this year being that there’s a need for more space for the Mission’s outreach to the neighborhood. The Mission is in the process of renovating their new outreach center that will dramatically improve their ability to distribute material resources, host neighborhood groups for meetings, and house the volunteers they rely upon for their work. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate any and all monetary donations and prayers!
God bless you,
Juan R. Martinez
