2018-2019 St. Athanasius Athletics Program

Sports at St. Athanasius are a fun and integral part of our students growth, spirit, and camaraderie. Athletic programs are offered throughout the school year to students in 4th through 8th grade, and our school competes enthusiastically in the Council II 3-A Catholic League of the North Shore. We also utilize programs connected to the Evanston Recreation Department.

While we encourage widespread participation at St. Athanasius, athletics is viewed as a privilege, not a right, of all students. Children enrolled in our school must maintain superior grades and demonstrate upstanding conduct in order to participate in sports.

At St. A’s we adhere to a coaching philosophy and skill development standards that have been adopted by Council II 3-A. These standards are applied across all sports.

Fourth-Sixth grade students enjoy equal playing time. In seventh & eighth grade, our athletes progress to a higher level of development and competitiveness. Depending upon sign up numbers, the 8th grade student athletes or combination of 7th & 8th grade students, make up our Varsity teams. While we do not cut students from our squads, players are allocated playing time based on ability, attendance at practice and we coach with a “play to win” philosophy. Wins and losses are tracked by the league and playoffs are held at the end of the season.

In the fall, 5th-8th Grade boys compete on the football field as part of Evanston Catholic, and 8th grade girls are invited to participate on the cheerleading squad. 4th-8th Girls take part in volleyball, and both 5th-8th boys and girls have the option of joining the schools cross-country team. Flag Football is offered to all 4th graders.

During the winter months, both 4th-8th Grade boys and girls field basketball teams. In the spring months, 5th-8th boys play volleyball and both 5th-8th Grade boys and girls are invited to compete on the track team.

Our Redhawks Booster Club also enriches our sports programs by hosting sporting events throughout the year. Contact President, Tony LoVerdi @ tonyloverdi@comcast.net for information or to become a member.

Athletic Registration takes place each May for the following academic year. All students must be register now for the upcoming Fall Season in order to prepare our coaching staff and anticipate equipment and uniform needs.

Two completed forms must be on file for a student to be eligible to participate. The athletics registration form is due at the end of the school year prior to participation on a school team. Student athletes must also return a Physician Permission slip (signed by their doctor), to be kept on file throughout the school year. This form is due prior to competition and practice time.

Please contact the St. A’s Athletic Director, Dawn Betz @ dawnbetzchi@aol.com for further information. Athletic registration for the 2018-2019 school year is currently open to all incoming 4th-8th graders and is due to the school office no later than Friday, June 10.
