Over the past several days, all of us have been following the historic flooding in southeast Texas. Hurricane Harvey has created an unprecedented and catastrophic weather event of immense proportions with extreme damage and further anticipated suffering.
In view of this extensive damage and in response to requests from the faithful, Archbishop José H. Gomez, Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has written to ask that a special collection be taken up for Hurricane Harvey.
Archbishop Gomez’s letter specifies that, “This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses through the USCCB.”
To fulfill this request, I ask that you please take up this second collection at all Masses of September 2-3, 2017.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend David J. Malloy
Bishop of Rockford
